River Mørrum

Last year 2012.
Autumn just before the river Mørrum in sweden closes for the winter.
I was on my first trip to Mørrum.
Often i had heard stories from fishing buddies about this fantastic river, how hard the fishing was and how difficult tit is to catch a salmon in the legendary river, made famous by Danish flyfisherman and author Jan Grünwald amongst others.

Driving over the bridge on several occasions for chasing the brackish pike in the baltic, i had not been giving this particular river many thoughts.

But suddenly a weekend in the autumn 2012 became available for fishing, and the danish coastline wasent very productive, and the searuns were hard to catch.
It seemed like an easy choice when Boserup called me and said. We are going to Mørrum, fishing for salmon in the daytime and searuns during the night.
Allright then…. Lets give it a go. And off we went.
In advance we rented a bed at Janne and elanors place, just a stone through away from the famous “Bankenakke” and pool 17.
The first night we came in for sleeping, we ran into this crazy danish fishing dude. Henrik Madsen. Henrik has been fishing Mørrum river for more than a decade, and he pretty much knows a great deal (or everything) about Mørrum.
For the next 2 days we were so lucky to be tagging along Henriks trail on the river, telling us stories about old legends catching Big silverish salmon in the murky water.
Showing us all the hotspots and being a very nice guy with a humor and a way of life that is not going unnoticed, all in all Henrik is a Very positive and very smiling character.

During the last day of fishing i had the privilege to hook in to a Mørrum river salmon, fishing pool 32 from the opposite side, just downstream of first big rock in the top section of the pool just on the side of the main current, you guys who have been there knows exactly what place im talking about.
Everything just felt right at that moment. The fly was just fishing perfectly with right amount of speed and the drag in the line revealed that the fly. A 6mm copper tube with a Black hackle. were fishing perfectly, when the 2 hard pulls in the rod woke me up, a salmon had gone for the fly. Now it would be nice to show of a very big salmon on a picture, but the salmon was not very big, i would estimate it to be around 1,5-2 kg.
I wheeled the fish to the bank and it was ready for landing, but when it felt the shallows on the bow, it made a final leap for freedom, the doublehook came loose and the salmon had won the battle.
The salmon might have gotten loose but i was hooked.
A lot of danish flyfishermen travel to Jutland in the spring, to catch a Danish salmon, in one of the westerly streams. Off course it is a beautiful place over there in Jutland.
But Mørrum. It is magic.
If you ever get at chance to go there, dont pass it.
You might come home without catching anything (Mørrum is notoriously known for being a very hard river to catch anything) But being there and smelling the atmosphere, and dreaming about the big silvery backs weaving between the black rocks and the green seaweed, deep down in the murky depths.
Rest assured, if you go once, you will come back.

The video is Mr. Henrik Madsen underhand casting his 13″ #8/9 G Loomis glx Classic.
Just underneath the trees in pool 32.
